A Plague of Tics

I really liked this short story. It wasn't what I thought it was going to be about from just reading the title. Sedaris showed how to keep his personal voice in his writing by writing about his obsessive compulsive behavior in detail and was not ashamed to tell it. It made me realize how I should, when I am writing, to make sure that my voice does not get lost in my writing. Sedaris let us know that this story was about him and wanted to tell his story. He gave good examples of him being hilarious at times, like when he would count each step on the way home from school, or he would lick every light switch that he passed. He put his voice out their but he also made it in an intertaining way to keep the reader in his writing. It made think that when I write my research paper I cannot lose my voice in all the information. My voice is as important as the information that I will be providing. My voice can show my opinion or even tell a story that can help support my paper even better. Plus it will make it more appealing to the reader if I use my voice because no one likes to read a paper that is all information.

Research Topic

The specific question that I hope to answer through my research paper is how the human health is being affected by diseased meat that is being sold out to the markets. Because of diseased meat is being sold it not only shows the lack of care for the animals, but also it can affect the human health, and how a human can be viewed as a "true human." What I already know about this topic is that I have seen bad meat being sold to fast food resturants. At a cow auction there were people from a fast food resturant that were buying cows that were in poor condition because they were cheap. I have also read from articles of how certain food companies that observe the meat to be passed, for it to be sold, allow diseased meat to go out onto the markets. Their are also books that I have looked up that contain information about how animals in factory farms and slaughter houses are treated that affect the human health when the animals are sold for meat. What I need to find out about this is different cases of crisis from a situation like this. I also need to find out all the different companies that the meat must go through to be allowed to be sold. One of the main things I need to find out more about is cases of people that have gotten sick or died from eating diseased meat to prove that this crisis is serious. Some arguments against my topic are, food companies do not allow diseased meat to be sold because they eat meat to. The food companies know that we have a lot of trust in them so they would not put the human health at risk. If their was diseased meat being sold on the market people would know about it and would be put out on the news because it affects humans. Some of the sources that i have looked at on about my topic are:

1. Wilkins, David. “What does society expect of veterinarians?” World Society for the
Protection of Animals. London, UK. 19 August 2008. Reading.
This is a source where a person is giving a presentation on how veterinarians can help stop meat being sold. In a way it should be their duty to protect the human health. They talk about how people that raise animals to sell to markets do not take care of them properly which cause the animals to become sick. When this happens the farmers then hurry up and try to sell the animal and not letting people know how the animals illness and when the meat is processed it can affect the humans that consume it.
2. Bauston, Gene. “Diseased Animals Are Being Marketed for Food.” USA Today Magazine
Mar. 2002: 64. Print.
This source talks about how diseased meat is being sold even when the meat goes through the U.S department of agriculture to be inspected. It also talks about how farmers can be cruel to their cows and letting their cow be sold so they can make a profit.
